In response to a recent study that includes the name of Indonesia to the list of 10 countries of the world that potentially has the worst result of meteor impacts, LIPI has two opinions, namely the 'trust' and 'no'.
Dr. Heru Santoso, Deputy CEO for Research & Scientific Affairs of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has two opinions in response to the reports, the first believing and not.
On the one hand, Heru believe in these results given the tectonic activity / slab of the Earth Indonesia is quite dynamic. "No wonder Indonesia and Japan entered into the list, given their considerable tectonic condition 'unstable'," Heru said here on Friday (07/01/2011).
While on the other hand, Heru did not really trust the results, given the evidence up to now a large asteroid collision in Indonesia are still very rare. "Given our continent is still relatively young age compared to other continents,"
So when reading the statement of Heru, the historical record of major asteroid collision in Indonesia itself is still rare.
Heru also added that the average evidence of asteroid impact is if there is already covered by the Earth's tectonic activity in Indonesia is quite dynamic.
Previously a study conducted by researchers from the University of Southampton, calling the 10 countries that potentially have the worst impacts of asteroids when under attack, they are China, Indonesia, India, Japan, USA, Philippines, Italy, Britain, Brazil and Nigeria.
Scientists at the University of Southampton is using the software NEOimpactor, or project from NASA's Near Earth Object, in doing research.
